This bird has flown No more a secret, we all know Some birds are made for house or cage But never choked upon the stage This bird has flown Now free to flutter on alone Some birds fly higher than the rest But this bird’s coming home to nest This beak is broke No words to speak, no songs, no hope No more to sing or laugh or cry This bird is for the by and by These wings are raw Hard worked and bloody from the war Once borne to beat so high and proud No more to soar above the crowd These feathers fall Drift to the ground, pale and forlorn Once coloured brightly by the sun Now plucked and puckered from the hunt This bird has flown Into the cold blue sky alone No more a flock, than four or three This bird will live forever free

I’ve got one eye on heaven And one eye on home Seems so long since I’ve seen you Feels like decades ago As I turn to the clouds I pray for one last touch I’ve got one eye on heaven and one eye on love I’ve got one eye on justice And one eye on peace Seems like nobody’s listening Seems there’s no-one to preach As I gaze at their faces I see no sign of change I’ve got one eye on heaven and one eye on the stage I’ve got one eye on me And one eye on you Every day we get closer Every night something new As our lives intertwine I feel our love taking root I’ve got one eye on heaven and one eye on you One eye gets blinded and one eye goes black One man in pieces and another intact One face gets burned and one smiles back Two men divided, on the same track I’ve got one eye on the horizon And one eye on my back Seems the more that I love The more my loved ones attack As I look to the sky it grows a menacing black I’ve got one eye on heaven and there’s no turning back

I don’t want to play this old game Getting drunk on a stage as the memories fade I don’t want to feed this old lie As it puffs up my pride and the roots twist inside I have had enough of bad times Bad religion and lies eating into my life I have seen my share of disgraces In familiar faces to keep me in line ‘Cause I’ve been told That dreams grow old Before they’re born I’ve soaked in sin And spread my wings But nevermore I have seen the church all my life As a weakness inside that the poor people hide I have seen their comical ways Left redundant today while our morals decay I have seen society slide Into desolate times as our country declines I have seen how ‘us’ becomes ‘I’ As we leave love behind in this secular time But I saw God With arms aloft And hands to hold I’ve seen the void Of faith destroyed But nevermore I have heard it said many times That science defines while religion is blind I have seen the mark of our maker In wonders of nature that cry out creator I have seen the purest of hearts Shining brighter than stars in the depths of the dark But as we fight our way through this age I see none of the sages to light up our path And as they cry Over our decline And man’s great lie I see a trace Of golden grace Upon the sky

If it hadn’t been for you If it hadn’t been for you I would have fallen down Deep under the ground If it hadn’t been for you If it hadn’t been for you I would have never come round I’d still be the same sad clown If it had been up to me If it had been up to me I would have wasted away Lost track of each day If it had been up to me If it had been up to me I would have stumbled my way Never learned how to kneel or pray If it hadn’t been for you I’d still be a melancholy fool If it hadn’t been for you I’d still be singing the same old blues If it hadn’t been for you If I didn’t have your love If I didn’t have your love I would be crumbling down Like a house built on sand If I didn’t have your love If I didn’t have your love I would be tossed to the sea No more than a breath on the breeze

I’m sick in the head I want to crush your iPhone Smash it apart with my fists And turn it into a dreidel I’m a twittering wreck I lost Myspace in the cosmos A voice adrift in the void In a sea of empty vessels I need respect Give me a voice on your forum My comments deserve respect My opinions are really important I’m bound to impress I’ve got a blog and I’m dangerous I’m armed to the teeth with text And I’m hunting down new followers I need your feed I’m feeling empty and bored I don’t even care if this friendship is real I just hate being ignored I’m not afraid of change But I’m feeling digitally lonely I’d rather just sit with my friends And hug my wife when she pokes me

No one listens to songs anymore They’re just part of the background like a picture on a wall And everybody’s growing their beards so long But no one listens to the words in the song The world keeps spinning around and around And status updates bring me down If opinions matter so much to you Why aren’t you out there doing some good? All these governments doing it again Stirring up war and making plans And antisemitism’s growing each year I can’t help thinking end times are near Fight the fight but don’t be trite Don’t take a stand just to have a right ‘Cause my Grandpa didn’t go to war with Hitler For your right to post your nipple on Twitter Terrorists are living not far from here And concentration camps in North Korea History’s coming full circle again But this time it’s gonna be us not them How in the world did it come to this? Russell Brand’s hair is a communist And democracy is going out of style And now Rolf Harris is a paedophile Christians are the scourge of the day With their goodly deeds and loving ways But beware of cursing the whole damned lot Just for the sins of the few at the top Three Jewish boys found in a ditch A chance for the press to hunt the witch And all this talk about apartheid states But it’s freedom that the press really hates No one listens to songs anymore They’re just part of the background like a picture on a wall And everybody’s growing their beards so long But no one listens to the words in the song

Genesis isn’t a textbook, it’s not for us to say It isn’t even called Genesis, Bereshit is its name So let’s put this one to bed now, it’s time to move away Read it in its original form where ‘yom’ means age, not day And ‘yom’ can mean a multitude of things There’s depth to the Hebrew that’s not found other languages And anyway we’re thinking like the Greeks Read it with a Jewish heart, not like a science geek But don’t check your science at the door Don’t check your science at the door of your church You shouldn’t take your science from a Jewish allegory Anymore than you’d take health advice from a Kerouac story It doesn’t make any sense for you to get bent out of shape There’s more to life than meets the eye and we can all relate There’s beauty in the universe and fine-tuning to boot And if you read those books in Hebrew terms you’ll find a deeper truth So don’t check your science at the door Don’t check your science at the door of your church You shouldn’t take your science from a Jewish allegory Anymore than trigonometry from a Charles Bukowski story The galaxy centre could be too distant from the parent star Or there’s too much radiation from adjacent spiral arms If too little galactic dust leads to slow planet formation Then there could be too much stellar ultraviolet radiation Weak gravity causes too much water loss from the atmosphere Inadequate cloud formation in our planet’s troposphere Inclination of orbit could leave temperatures too high And there’s a hundred other factors that could destroy us any time So don’t check your science at the door Don’t check your science at the door of your church You shouldn’t take your science from a Jewish allegory Anymore than economics from an Enid Blyton story

My baby’s smile is the sweetest of smiles And nobody knows it but me She sparkles and shines like the stars in the sky And nobody knows it but me She doesn’t have off days, she doesn’t tell lies We live off our love and have peace in our lives My baby’s smile tells me everything’s fine And nobody knows it but me My baby curls up in bed every night And nobody knows it but me She makes little noises and laughs in her sleep And nobody knows it but me I used to have nightmares and wake up in screams But since she’s been with me I’ve the sweetest of dreams ‘Cause my baby soothes me and makes me complete And nobody knows it but me We sit for hours and talk in the bath And nobody knows it but us We laugh till we cry and we cry till we laugh And nobody knows it but us We knew from the first tender moment of bliss We know we’ve both waited our whole lives for this I bought her a ring and I know that it fits And nobody knows it but us We have decided that we’ll move away And nobody knows it but us We’ll start a new life in a happier place And nobody knows it but us When I tell my family I hope they don’t fuss I hope they’ll get drunk and be happy for us But I fear that they’ll throw us under the bus And nobody knows it but me We got our tickets for a long, lonely flight And nobody smiled but us We packed up our things and we said our goodbyes And nobody smiled but us My parents gave blessings for breaking new shores They loved us and hugged us, held open the doors But everyone else either cried or ignored And nobody smiled but us

When peace like a river attendeth my way When sorrows like sea billows roll Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say ‘It is well, it is well with my soul’ It is well with my soul It is well, it is well with my soul Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come Let this blest assurance control That Christ has regarded my helpless estate And has shed his own blood for my soul It is well with my soul It is well, it is well with my soul My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious thought My sin, not in part, but the whole Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul It is well with my soul It is well, it is well with my soul O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight The clouds be rolled back as a scroll The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul It is well with my soul It is well, it is well with my soul

about

This album tells a story about a journey. A story about change. It’s a story about what happens when someone questions your worldview and you find it’s built on a foundation of straw. It’s a story about leaving behind everything you thought was good and true and searching for something different. It’s a story about asking big questions and finding bigger answers, and then even bigger questions. It’s a story about losing one voice and hearing another.

It’s been an intensely personal journey, and one which won’t necessarily be completely clear to the listener, but this album is made up of the songs that appeared along the way. Most of them were written in England, at my desk at work, in the year before leaving for Canada. It took roughly three years for me to record these songs but the actual studio time was less than 48 hours in total. I'm a master procrastinator.

The Quaint & the Curious Chilliwack, British Columbia

The Quaint & the Curious is the solo project of singer/songwriter Taff Thatcher. After six years spent touring and recording with Alt. Country darlings The Whybirds, the Quaint & the Curious was formed as an output for all of the songs, sounds and styles that had been forgotten over the years, collecting dust in the corners of hard drives and tape machines. ... more
